Giovan Giacomo Giordano Award 2024: Recognizing Excellence in Rehabilitation Medicine in Italy

In 2010, the Giovan Giacomo Giordano International Scientific Center was established, and every year, during the Gala of The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), sponsors an award (the Giovan Giacomo Giordano Award) for creativity and ethics in scientific research.

The aim is to reward scientists or doctors who, through their work, has faced challenges while respecting ethical standards.

In 2024, the award in Italy was presented to Professor Raffaele Gimigliano and Professor Giovanni Iolascon. The former is an internationally renowned physiatrist and Emeritus Professor at the University of Naples, and was formerly the Director of the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the “Vanvitelli” University Hospital. In addition to his academic and clinical career, Gimigliano was president and one of the founders of the Italian Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (SIMFER). Professor Giovanni Iolascon, current President of SIMFER, has a long academic and scientific career, having published over 400 articles and currently leading the Multidisciplinary Department of Medical-Surgical and Dental Specialties. His expertise in rehabilitation and his international research activities make him a strong leader for SIMFER for the next three years.

The award was presented yesterday by Dr. Raffaele Canonico, Medical Director of SSCN, and Professor Antonio Giordano, President of the Sbarro Institute and Professor of Anatomy and Pathological Histology at the University of Siena, during the “Sport, Environment, and Health” conference organized by physiatrist Patrizia Maiorano in the Aula Magna of Federico II University.
