Dr. Antonio Giordano Honored with the One Health Award for Outstanding Contributions to Cancer Research and Public Health
17 Oct , 2025

Teramo, Italy — Dr. Antonio Giordano, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Molecular Biology, Temple University, and Professor of Anatomy and Pathological Histology, University of Siena, internationally renowned oncologist and a leading figure in biomedical research, has been honored at the OHA 2025 conference with the One Health Award in recognition of his groundbreaking scientific achievements and enduring commitment to public health. At the two day conference in Teramo, Italy, Giordano was joined by speakers presenting scientific research and discussion panels, including his talk on “Cancer and the environment: molecular pathways, prevention, and public health in a changing world.”
As Founder and Director of the Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO), and the Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine at Temple, Giordano’s work continues to advance the understanding of cancer, genetics, and the potential of precision medicine. In particular, conference organizers note that Giordano is bestowed with the One Health Award for his research into the mechanisms that regulate the cell cycle and the genetic foundations of cancer, offering critical insights into how tumors develop and progress.
Beyond his scientific contributions, Giordano has been an outspoken advocate for the environment and the right to health. For years, he has worked to raise public awareness about the connections between pollution, the environment, and cancer, most notably with his work on the Terra dei Fuochi (Land of Fires), a region of southern Italy plagued by increased risk of cancer due to biohazardous pollution. As a result of this research, Giordano has become a notable advocate promoting policies that protect both human health and the planet.
“Giordano has shown a strong civic commitment,” the conference organizers say. “For years he has fought for environmental protection and the right to health. For his tireless dedication to research, public outreach, and the protection of public health, this tribute is awarded to him today.”
The One Health Award acknowledges individuals whose research and advocacy have had a decisive impact on global health through a holistic and multidisciplinary approach. Organizers say that they have given the award to Giordano as a scientist who exemplifies the spirit of the One Health initiative, with an emphasis on the interdependence of human, animal, and environmental well-being.
