Childhood Pancreatic Cancer

Definition

Childhood pancreatic cancer is extremely rare and involves the development of malignant cells in the tissues of the pancreas. The types seen in children differ from those in adults and can include pancreatoblastoma, solid pseudopapillary tumors, and very rarely, adenocarcinoma.

Characteristics

Symptoms may include abdominal pain, a palpable mass, jaundice, vomiting, and weight loss. Because these tumors are rare, diagnosis is often delayed until symptoms become significant.

Diagnosis and Prognosis

Diagnosis involves imaging studies like ultrasound, CT, or MRI scans, and biopsy. Prognosis depends on the tumor type, size, location, and whether it has spread. Pancreatoblastoma generally has a better outcome when treated early.

Treatment

Treatment options include surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy, and, in some cases, radiation therapy. The treatment approach depends on the tumor type and stage at diagnosis.
