Breast Cancer Pregnancy

Definition

Breast cancer during pregnancy is a rare condition in which breast cancer is diagnosed while a woman is pregnant. It is the most common cancer found in pregnant women, though it remains uncommon overall.

Characteristics

Symptoms are similar to non-pregnancy-related breast cancer and may include a lump in the breast, nipple changes, or skin dimpling. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make the breasts denser, potentially delaying diagnosis.

Diagnosis and Prognosis

Diagnosis involves physical examination, ultrasound, and biopsy. Mammography can be done safely with abdominal shielding. Prognosis depends on the stage at diagnosis and the timing of treatment. Early diagnosis and carefully planned treatment can improve outcomes for both mother and baby.

Treatment

Treatment must be tailored to protect both the patient and the fetus. Surgery is generally safe during all trimesters. Chemotherapy may be given in the second or third trimester, but radiation and hormone therapy are postponed until after delivery. Multidisciplinary care is essential.
