Craniopharyngioma Childhood

Definition

Craniopharyngioma is a rare, typically benign brain tumor that develops near the pituitary gland and hypothalamus in children. Despite being non-cancerous, it can cause serious health problems due to its location.

Characteristics

These tumors may cause vision problems, hormone imbalances, growth delays, and increased pressure in the brain. Symptoms often include headaches, nausea, fatigue, and issues related to puberty or growth.

Diagnosis and Prognosis

Diagnosis includes MRI scans and endocrine evaluations. Although usually slow-growing, craniopharyngiomas can recur after treatment. Prognosis is generally favorable with proper management, but long-term effects on vision and hormonal function are common.

Treatment

Treatment may involve surgery to remove the tumor, often followed by radiation therapy. Hormone replacement therapy is frequently needed due to pituitary damage. A multidisciplinary care approach is essential for managing both the tumor and its lasting effects.
