Gallbladder Cancer

Definition

Gallbladder cancer is a rare and aggressive cancer that begins in the gallbladder, a small organ under the liver that stores bile. It often remains undetected until it reaches an advanced stage.

Characteristics

Early gallbladder cancer may not cause symptoms. As the disease progresses, symptoms can include abdominal pain, nausea, jaundice, and weight loss. Risk factors include gallstones, chronic gallbladder inflammation, and certain infections.

Diagnosis and Prognosis

Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests like ultrasound, CT scans, MRI, and sometimes biopsy. Prognosis depends heavily on how early the cancer is detected. Early-stage disease has better outcomes, but many cases are diagnosed after the cancer has spread.

Treatment

Treatment usually includes surgery to remove the gallbladder and surrounding tissues. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy may be used for advanced or unresectable disease. Clinical trials are exploring new therapeutic approaches.
