Mycosis Fungoides

Definition

Mycosis fungoides is a rare type of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma that primarily affects the skin. It is a slow-growing cancer that may eventually involve lymph nodes and internal organs if not treated.

Characteristics

Symptoms often begin with scaly, itchy skin patches or plaques, which can later thicken or form tumors. In advanced stages, the cancer can spread beyond the skin to other parts of the body. The disease typically progresses over years or even decades.

Diagnosis and Prognosis

Diagnosis is made through skin biopsies, blood tests, and imaging studies. Prognosis depends on the stage at diagnosis. Early-stage mycosis fungoides has an excellent outlook, while advanced stages require more intensive management.

Treatment

Treatment options include skin-directed therapies such as topical corticosteroids, phototherapy, and radiation, as well as systemic treatments like chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy for advanced disease.
