Skin Cancer

Definition

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, developing from abnormal growth of skin cells. The main types include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, each with distinct behaviors and risks.

Characteristics

Skin cancer can appear as a new growth, a sore that does not heal, or a change in an existing mole. Risk factors include excessive sun exposure, use of tanning beds, fair skin, family history of skin cancer, and having many moles or atypical moles.

Diagnosis and Prognosis

Diagnosis involves a skin examination, dermoscopy, and biopsy of suspicious areas. Prognosis depends on the type, depth, and stage of the cancer. Basal and squamous cell carcinomas are usually highly curable, while melanoma can be more aggressive and life-threatening if not caught early.

Treatment

Treatment options include surgical removal, cryotherapy, topical treatments, radiation therapy, and, for advanced cases, immunotherapy or targeted therapy. Early detection is crucial for the best outcomes.
